Spring DIY Car Detailing Essentials
Why Spring Is the Most Important Time to Detail Your Car
TIME SAVER tip here: if you're looking to spend the absolute minimum amount of time, do steps 1, 5 and 6 below.
However I'm here to explain why taking a couple of easy extra steps will REALLY make a difference for your next detail and make your neighbor ask for your secrets.
So.. why do a full spring clean on my car and why isn't a shampoo enough?
Winter in Europe leaves every car covered in salt, tar (surprisingly lots of it), iron fallout (brake dust etc), sand, and traffic film.
Even if your car looks clean, the paint and wheels are usually full of contamination that slowly damages surfaces and collects more dirt. You can notice this by observing the dulling of paint and the rough texture on the sides of your car.
The goal of a spring detail should be to remove winter grime and add protection for the months ahead, maintain any existing protection.
With a few quality products, you can safely bring the gloss back and make your car far easier to maintain for the season ahead.
Below is a simple spring detailing routine using products available on Autojoy, including premium picks and budget alternatives depending on your detailing budget and goals.
1. Start With a Proper Pre-Wash (Never Skip This)
Jumping straight into a contact wash is one of the biggest mistakes people make.
If you touch the paint while it’s still covered in sand and road grit, you’re basically dragging sandpaper across the clear coat.
A pre-wash removes the majority of dirt before the wash mitt touches the paint.
A dedicated snow foam or pre-wash cleaner from our Snow Foam section.
Best option
A dedicated snow foam or pre-wash cleaner from brands like CarPro or GYEON used with a foam lance or sprayer.
These products are designed to break down road film and winter grime while being safe on waxes and coatings.
Budget alternative
A citrus pre-wash from Blend Brothers or Auto Finesse applied with a pump sprayer.
It’s simple, effective, and perfect for people washing at home without a full foam cannon setup.
How to do it
-
Rinse the car first (good for cutting through the first, loose contamination layer)
-
Apply foam or pre-wash in your preferred way, aim for good coverage of the surface
-
Let it dwell for a few minutes. Do not let it dry out.
-
Rinse thoroughly with pressure
A proper pre-wash can remove 70–90% of the dirt before contact washing, which massively reduces swirl marks and makes the following stages more effective.
2. Deep Clean the Wheels
Your wheels probably took the worst abuse during winter.
Brake dust mixed with salt and road grime builds up quickly inside barrels and around spokes.
Dedicated wheel cleaners make the job much easier.
We carry a variety of trustworthy wheel and tire cleaners here. My personal favourite is GYEON Iron WheelCleaner and Gyeon TireCleaner, but you can't go wrong with our pre-vetted selection either.
Use a soft wheel brush to reach tight areas and rinse thoroughly.
Clean wheels alone can make the whole car look dramatically fresher.
Cleaning your tires with a tire brush and cleaner will remove browning from your tire and make dressings stay on for much longer.
3. Remove Tar Deposits
After winter, many cars develop small black tar dots or even browning along the doors, bumpers, and rear panels. These come from asphalt and road construction and won’t come off with normal shampoo. These are difficult to remove in the winter if you don't have access to an indoor washing bay.
Use a dedicated tar remover to dissolve these spots chemically, so they can be rinsed away. Our Tar removers are listed here.
Best option
Tar removers from Gtechniq, GYEON or CarPro that quickly dissolve stubborn asphalt residue.
Budget alternative
Tar removers from Auto Finesse which also work well for seasonal deep cleans and many detailers and enthusiasts swear by it.
Spray the product on the affected areas, allow it to dwell briefly, and rinse thoroughly. You’ll often see tar spots begin to run or melt away as the product works. As usual - don't let it dry on the surface.
Doing this step now prevents tar from being smeared across the paint during the wash stage.
4. Remove Iron Fallout
Brake dust particles and industrial fallout must be removed with a dedicated iron fallout remover.
These particles embed into paint and wheels over time and can slowly damage the finish.
Iron removers dissolve these particles chemically so they can be rinsed away safely.
These react with iron contamination and typically turn pink or purple as they work, this is the so-called "bleeding" effect and makes it easy to understand that the product is working and assess the amount of iron fallout contamination on the vehicle.
Best option
CarPro's IronX became synonymous with iron removal when it was first introduced. A premium, nicely scented option is available from Gyeon too.
Budget alternative
Iron fallout removers from Auto Finesse which provide strong cleaning at a lower price point.
Spray the product on paint and wheels, allow it to react for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly. As before, don't let the product it dry out on your paint.
At this stage, a large portion of contamination has already been removed without touching the paint.

5. Safe Contact Wash
Now that most contaminants are gone and with your car noticeably cleaner already, it’s safe to wash the car by hand.
Use a high-lubrication shampoo, so the wash mitt glides across the paint safely.
Our Wash & Dry section has everything you need for a safe contact wash of your pride and joy.
Best option
Car shampoos from Gyeon or Gtechniq designed for coated vehicles and maintenance washes.
Autojoy Tip: You may also consider CarPro Descale as a very powerful acid wash to remove waterspots created by mineral buildup in the paint and deep clean your ceramic coatings. This shouldn't be used as a regular wash and it will strip your car of waxes and sealants.
Budget alternative
We have good bang for your buck Shampoos from Blend Brothers and Auto Finesse that deliver solid cleaning performance for everyday use.
Basic wash technique
-
Use the two-bucket method
-
Use a quality microfiber wash mitt
-
Wash top down (low parts of the car are way dirtier and should be saved for last)
-
Rinse the mitt frequently (as soon as you feel it gripping up or 1-2 times per panel)
Because most contamination was removed earlier, this wash stage becomes much safer for the paint.
6. Protect the Paint
After cleaning and decontamination, the paint is ready for protection. One of the easiest ways to add protection is a spray-on rinse-off sealant.

Protection helps:
-
repel water
-
reduce dirt sticking
-
make future washes easier
-
increase gloss
Best option
GYEON Q²M WetCoat
This product is incredibly simple to use. Spray it onto the wet car and rinse it off immediately. It creates a strong hydrophobic layer that repels water and dirt and can last up to 12 weeks.
A couple of sprays per panel is enough if the car has been washed properly.
It works on:
-
paint
-
trim
-
wheels
-
glass
and takes only a couple minutes to apply.
For a DIY detailer, this step offers the biggest visual improvement with almost no effort without using a dedicated ceramic coating process.
Autojoy Tip: rinse off thorughly to make sure your product gets spread evenly and doesn't dry on.
7. Drying
Use a dedicated drying towel to prevent waterspotting and marring. A good microfiber drying towel will absorb multiple liters of water and still be effective.
We've worked hard to put together a competitive set of drying towels with descriptions to make sure you can't go wrong. This seems to be a category where presonal preference matters a lot.
If you have a bigger car, it's recommended to look at the larger towels.
Our drying towels are available here in different specifications and designs.
8. Refresh the Interior
Winter interiors collect sand, salt, moisture, and dust. A quick interior reset makes the car feel new again. Spend the extra time here to make the interior match the fresh outside. Our dedicated interior products will leave your interior looking factory fresh and smelling the part too. The scents are not overpowering and will give a pleasant sense of cleanliness.
We have both general purpose interior detailers that have antimicrobial, antibacterial properties and can be used on any surface, best as a maintenance clean product.
Ourdedicated cleaners have formulas that target plastics, trim, leather and textile individually, providing maximum cleaning power and material safety while leaving a natural factory finish. UV-resistant coatings are available for each surface.
Use a soft microfiber towel and avoid overly glossy dressings if you prefer a clean OEM look.
Autojoy Tip: Spray into your cleaning towel and not on the surface to minimise overspray spots in the interior.
